Ensuring Quality and Sustainability in Asia’s Booming Cocoa Industry

Cotecna, as a member of the Cocoa Association of Asia (CAA), is helping deliver better quality control and food safety to the industry.

Driven by a surging domestic demand, Asia is the world’s fastest growing region for chocolate products. By 2024 the market is forecast to exceed $32 billion, which represents a compound annual growth rate of over 6%.

The processing of cocoa beans in the region also rose by roughly 30% between the period 2016 to 2018, and compiled grinding figures indicate that it is on pace to hit another record high in 2019.

This increase in demand has turned Asia into a net importer of cocoa beans and has boosted the prospects of processors and grinders in key countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

But the boom in Asia’s cocoa market has also made it more important than ever to ensure product quality, safety and conformity. Sustainability is key to ensure that the industry can continue to thrive and grow into the future.

To address these challenges, the Cocoa Association of Asia (CAA) was founded in 2004, bringing together major traders, buyers, factories, grinders and services providers from across Asia’s cocoa sector, and providing them with a platform for the exchange of technical knowledge, government policy guidance and the introduction of new standards.

As an Associate Member, Cotecna is uniquely positioned to offer inspection and testing services that follow the leading industry standards and that fully support the sustainability and quality objectives of the CAA.

Through our global network of laboratories, we are able to provide support throughout the cocoa supply chain, from origin right through to store shelves.
