Geneva, 24 April, 2014
On April 11, 2014, Cotecna Inspection SA, one of the world’s leading international trade inspection, security and certification companies, started vehicle scanner operations in the port of Bujumbura in Burundi in the context of a public-private partnership contract signed with the government of the Republic of Burundi in March 2013.
The contract involves the supply and installation of two mobile X-ray 4 MeV scanners in the port of Bujumbura and in the towns of Kobero and Kanyaru, as well as an Electronic Transit Monitoring System. This contract marks the return of Cotecna to this strategic region in East Africa with the provision of high technology.
This technical support program aims to assist the Government of the Republic of Burundi in its efforts to secure the country through the use of leading edge monitoring and geolocation tools, to strengthen Customs competencies by transferring technology and know-how, and to increase the speed of customs clearance , while effectively fighting illicit trafficking.
Cotecna has trained local staff and Customs officers to use the new high-tech tools. The training sessions were held in Bujumbura in March and April 2014. By mid-2014, Cotecna Burundi will employ close to 80 staff, in several sites at the port and elsewhere within the country.
Robert Massey, CEO Cotecna said, “The excellent cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Burundi and Cotecna has allowed us to set up the first scanner in the port of Bujumbura in optimal conditions. We are proud to be part of this project and thus contribute to the modernization of the Customs of Burundi and homeland security."
